Thanks rockm. I thought it was an elm (didn’t know the cedar part) but was basing it off google-it’s nice to know.

Have they done well? How do the look now?

And Ali- what’s the hunter referring to?
Means hunting and collecting trees from the nature.

So glad I stumbled across this thread. I read through the whole thing, and I can relate so much on the fact that you wanted to keep working and do something new with the tree as fast as you could. Before I got into bonsai I had grown a maple in a 5 gallon bucket for about 7 years and then one night bonsai grabbed my attention on my YouTube recommended. When I decided to turn the tree into a bonsai I did a little work to fast and I dont have that tree anymore unfortunately ;) Now I've got multiple projects, and have decided to work moderately, so I would not stress my trees out and not kill them. So glad your collection went so smoothe!

Looking good. This is the first time I would say the tree is probably out of danger. I would still take it easy with it this year. Mainly focus on wiring to get the angle correct for branches coming off the trunk, and some light pruning of the new branches. I would not do any heavy work on the chop scar until 2021.

thank you Leo!

I don’t have plans for any work at this time.
while in a way I see the tree I am not sure I see the road to it.

My “plan” at the moment is based on growing out lower branches to get them thicker. I think I will have to adjust the angle whenever I repot ( ina a year or two).
At the present moment, I am looking at the most perfect 1969 Shelby mustang ‘Eleanor’.
I dug the tree, it has movement, it’s thick, and most importantly... it’s ALIVE’

thanks for the positivity! I hope to care for this tree for the next 50 years

Also any idea on the white cup?

I stuck the tip of a branch with boldging buds into a cupof soil to see what would happen.

I am thinking roofs will grow? Any ideas? Is it dumb?

Looking real nice...Do you plan on chopping again next year or are you going to pull a leader toward the current height?

I think I’m staying with this chop, but I’m not sure- I have to do something about the look of the chop top

It might root and grow. It might pull enough water and grow for a while without rooting. Time will tell. Elms are relatively easy to root compared to most tree species, but who knows? Not dumb, rather a "casual" experiment.

I figured I want that branch thicker anyways so didn't want to cut it. Still unsure which other branches I will keep.

I figure for now I am focusing on getting lower branches thicker

The mustang from gone in 60 seconds.
I was trying to explain how awesome I think this tree is because it is my first collected tree.

I figured! So random!

Careful her mirrors!
