The plant shops are finishing up now here in Minnesota, and I’ve been eagerly watching/waiting to see when the nurseries decide to wrap it up and slash prices.

Finally seeing the 75% off tags around so I dropped by a parking lot sale and then to good ‘ol Menards.
-5$ Sad looking minuet weigela from the sad parking lot shop.
From menards,
- A ninebark (darts gold) 10$
- pearl bush (lotus moon?) 10$

Anyways, I’m excited to see what I can do with these! For now I may just plant in earth.

I would love to see what other peoples have scored for cheap, and what there plans are for their new material.
Thanks!

Nice prices. Good luck nursing them back😃

Picked these two Melaleuca ericifolias up for 9 euro.
Pretty happy with that as it's not often I find them that big.

Have already cut back to the line, it's a bit clump just below the line so will need to choose what stays and goes.

This one is different.

Again cut back to the red and going to go with a clump style.

IMG_6903sd.jpg

Also picked up the smallest Eucalyptus in the world. E. vernicosa.
Just needs a bit of wire and many years growing, it may not like life in my part of Spain though but so far so good.

Other fall pick ups include 2 Eucalyptus deglupta, a Eucalyptus caesia and a Melaleuca rhaphiophylla all of which are very young nursery stock.
Incoming soon should be a JRP and a Mugo.

Nice!
Yeah, I killed 2 that size this year and they were 25$ a piece. 😂
I got one a few months ago that size for $24 too. He's just been sitting out back in his nursery pot. I've been trying not to kill it, but it seems very happy in that nursery pot.

Good call. Yeah I don’t know what my problem was but I read up as much as I could - looked at Vance’s tutorial and such... but still had no success
I will definitely try again next year though.
If u don’t mind, Please keep me updated about it’s progression and/or dormancy preps! 👍.
The gal (grower) at the high-end nursery by me said they’re really hard to kill but also will die low subtly without to much indication up top- and then they fairly suddenly are goners.
Anyways good luck.

Very interesting pants. I had to google Melaleuca as I’m not familiar with these.
Looks like great fun.

They are pretty neat, have a distinct look to them and definitely respond well to bonsai culture. Looking forward to these ones as I have a few others but they are much younger.

So I did a bit of root work on the pearl bush and planted it out front of the house.
This ninebark, ....,oh I’m just really enjoying this tree. I think I may put in a grow box with hopes of working it sooner.

Heres a Potentilla I rescued for free from a nursery dump in August .
It looked dead, totally brown and withered so I cut i back and watered it and its made a miraculous recovery....!
I love the bark and movement in the trunk on this and am eager to start work on it!!
When would be the best time to repot this into a training pot or should I put it in the ground for winter?

I agree! Very cool looking trunk.
Nice save!
I’m wondering the same thing with my new nine ark and weigela I got. whether I Should plant them in ground for a couple years or.......
I think I may put them in wood grow boxes for winter, and then (granted they survive) I will be able to do a bit of work on them easily in the spring.

🤔

For Minneapolis-Saint Paul area, you are probably within 2 weeks of a frost or hard freeze. Don't take anything you buy now out of their pots. Just dig a hole, or trench in a shady spot in the garden, an bury all but an inch of the rim of these pots in the ground. Mulch them in. Cover with autumn leaves after the ground begins to freeze. You can repot them this upcoming spring.

Once again, thanks Leo. Much appreciated.
I will do exactly that. 👍

I told myself I was done...but I knew better.
Had to get this clearance Japanese yew today. It still set me back 25$ but well, I’m excited to have it

Some updates on my -first fall clearance- plants.
PART 1 - Minuet Wiegela

Decided to see what I could do with this thing. (I purchased from a sketchy parking lot sale)
789BBE9F-8781-480B-95EB-A8E32993E870.jpeg466790D5-AB8B-4119-AE53-7AB5F8B5A7A0.jpeg

Did some major work to it.
nastiest root mess I’ve seen so far.
I decided to wrap it around this rock
1ABADAB7-83E7-4BB2-A180-B94BD72082B3.jpeg
Trimmed a lot of thick fiberless roots, and put it in a pond basket.D33B3B60-83AD-44FC-B69A-DEC380E59591.jpeg693FC81C-EF93-410E-91BF-8C43AD6FF4D5.jpeg
Would love to see this live so I can work on it further. 🙂

PART 2 - “lotus moon” Pearlbush.

Not to much to this one.
Combed the roots and Planted it into the front garden last fall.
30CE0D5B-7EC7-408E-84B9-ECAB16C97191.jpeg
Pruned back last week.
54E70CE6-67CE-4FAC-957D-BEF24EBF4E7B.jpeg
think I’ll leave this one here for 2-3 yrs.

My no-bark Ninebark is still in the nursery pot but is shaping up. Trunk line in site and some decent branching. -to my untrained eye n e way. 😏

repot next spring. 🤞

Nice!

You’ve inspired me....

I will have to “acquire” one of these specimens, myself..(ninebark). it’ll be in fall for me, as well. ;)

Like a thief in the night...

🤓
