I picked this tree up last weekend. It really got my attention. Being around n Texas this is our state tree so I've wanted one for sometime.
That is a one gallon pot next to it for size reference.

Great tree, hate to break it to you but the Pecan is the state tree of Texas :)

Have been wanted to give oaks a shot, will follow this progression

Nice tree with potential. FYI, this is most likely an Escarpment Live oak (quercus fusiformis)

It is a subspecies of Southern Live Oak (quercus virginiana). It likes drier conditions and is more cold hardy than the main species.

The Pecan became Texas' state tree after Gov. James Hogg had one planted on his grave . You know Gov. James Hogg, he's the guy who had a daughter named Ima. Yeah, as in Ima Hogg-- true story for all you non-Texans. No, contrary to the rumor, he did not have another daughter named Ura. 😁

I like this side as the front, though over time the front can, and probably should change several times. At this point the nebari looks wide, the awkward roots are to the back, only issue is a crossing root which can be removed at some point in the future.
