I went to my first bonsai nursery. What was crazy is it is less than a mile away from my house and I never knew it was there. Matsuda Nursery I don't really know what I was looking at but Mr. Matsuda was great. He gave me a tour, from starter material to finished trees. Some of the very old trees are amazing. He has a monthly class that I will probably attend. In Jan it is on hard wood cuttings.

I can see how this hobby could quickly become an obsession if you were not careful.

Take classes! I wish these were offered in my area.

You are a lucky man. If I were to live a mile from a Japanese bonsai nursery, I'd be there every week. In the early 90's, I used to live about 5 miles from the Murata Bonsai Nursery in Westminster (in Orange County CA) and I was there all the time. That's where I first got hooked into bonsai. Murata was a master. His collection trees were world-class bonsai . I still wonder what happened to his best trees. It's closed now and I really missed having a nice , real, Japanese nursery to visit. I don't know who or how Matsuda is, but I am very sure he's a good man and a good teacher. You should try to learn from Matsuda as much as you can. Their generation is disappearing. There are very few of these Japanese owned bonsai nursery left in California. Good luck!
