UNLEASH the termites.

Cool start Sam, never gave much thought to something like this. Although I thought it was more like actual roots of a toppled or washed out trees, interesting.

As it is in the last picture it would make an interesting stand for a Bonsai. I would almost think it would actually be too distracting, as in taking away the visual from the displayed Bonsai and directing it towards the stand. Its eyecatching for certain.

lookin good sam.... can't wait to see it all textured and smoothed out....

@BillS interestingly many of them are natural (usually boxwood) however a good number are also carved.... and some of the natural ones are enhanced

Thanks Eric, I'll keep my eyes open for those hedge rows that might get the dozer.

thanks for the feedback, all.

for bill:

subterranean termites hollowed this old casuarina out causing the tree to go down during a recent storm. considering the labor involved with hollowing something this size. I doubt I'dve taken on the project hadn't it been for the termites.

lying ahead is more rough carving around the trunk to create "roots" then leveling at the top and bottom. the bottom will be carved to create legs. the top will be fit within a compatible slab shaped to appear a part of the original trunk. then lots of finish carving, sanding, etc.

there's no book on this, so its bump your nose and go !

best wishes, sam

today I found 2 more hollow casuarina stumps for a total of 3 waiting to be worked on. hopefully these will become tall root stands 2, 3, & 4

rough cuts done - tall root stand

work continues on my first tall root stand. the top and bottom have been trimmed to level things. the roughing in work is done so the die grinder and aggressive bits are exchanged for a dremel to shape and smooth the openings and texture the "roots". sanding with several grades of paper will follow.

I have a rough cut casuarina slab for the top from the same tree. this needs to be shaped, attached and blended to look as natural as possible. meanwhile, here are some progress pictures at the end of the day. the top shown in the pictures is a black walnut ji ita I happen to be working on. this is not the top for this stand. so far, I am pleased with the results.

best wishes, sam
