It's just winter browning. The Shimpakus are really healthy. The black dragon Cryptomeria has a surprise baby brother if I can separate them. Both JBP got some lower shoots but they look really weak. All in all I am pleased. I will put them in grow boxes this weekend. Is that just winter browning on the shimpaku or is there some other problem? I don't see brown tips on them over here so just wondering what's going on.
Looks like there are a couple of small shoots near the base of the pine on the left - very weak but still probably viable. I would snip about 1" off the top of that one to divert energy to those lower buds - just leave enough needles to keep the tree going.
Not sure about the other pine. Can't see any lower shoots and only a couple of sad needles left. Young bare wood sometimes produces buds if the tip is removed. Maybe some really tight bends might bring the top down low enough to start from there. Otherwise trunks like this are what I use to graft onto - other black pine varieties or white pine grow well on black roots.
On the 5th day of Christmas my university gave to me, nooo-ho-li-daaayyyys
No Christmas, but I get 2 New Years parties.Hey, you're in China Don't tell me you don't get Chinese New Year off
There are now new candles under the top cut. The really weak bottom branch is now showing some life. I'm crossing my fingers. Is that just winter browning on the shimpaku or is there some other problem? I don't see brown tips on them over here so just wondering what's going on.

Congrats on the progress so far. All looking very well.JBPs are trying to gain vigor. There are buds now, albeit weak, near the bottoms.
That was why I cut the whole tops off when I first got them. Since the trees are weak I'll be watching them closely. If the tops are too vigorous I will decandle in June and leave the basal buds alone.Congrats on the progress so far. All looking very well.
Note that basal buds on pines often do not develop when there are stronger buds growing above. If you really need any of those lower shoots I would control the growth of the upper shoots a bit through summer to give them a chance.
