Is there a good way to fix the taper in the trunk? There was a high root attached to that part of the trunk and I guess created the taper. Should I just cut/carve or let it grow? Thanks for all the help

I would actually try to air layer it or ground layer it at the point where that root was coming off the trunk, It'll beat trying to heal the wound you'll make carving it or trying to grow it out. What kind of maple is it?

Damn Skippy, handsome John is right. Cut a ring around your tree at the top and bottom of the yellow, apply some rooting hormone around the cut, pack some peat moss around it and backfill your container with soil up to the purple. You can start this next spring and repot the following spring while cutting off the old root structure. Maples will flare very quickly
