I was looking for Lace rock on different sites an came across Flourite gravel substrate made from fracted porous clay substrate @ Seachem.com. I was wondering if this would work as a substitute for lava or pumice in my soil mixes? I like the color of the gravel, browns, reds @ blacks all mixed together. This stuff is used in fish tanks, anyway just putting this out there. Pete

Its like turface. But for the price I would look for a better alternative.

Hope that helps
Eric

Eric, thanks for your quick reply. So it would work then, I found some at Pet careRX for 20.99 for 7kg.(15.4lbs.) thats just a little over a dollar a lb. I guess that kind of goes along with pricing on bonsai related things lol! Maybe I'll check the local pet stores an see if they have it. Again thanks, Pete

If it is indeed like turface, I pick up 50lb bags for $15. Bonsai can certainly be expensive if you let it be.

I know this is an old thread but I’ve used the Flourite mostly in my desert roses but I use to have it in a lot of my trees and I still have a few. I use turface too but I think this stuff is far superior. All the trees I’ve ever used the fluorite on look much better, much healthier. They just seem to grow better, I don’t know if it’s just in my brain or what.. but I think it’s some really good stuff. I used to get it for like $15 but now it’s like $27 a bag. Super expensive. I usually mix it with chicken grit and boy do my desert roses love it. I have an acacia in a pot of it now. And it’s out growing all of its brothers and sisters planted in akadama, turface and potting mix. I think it’s the bees knees.
