How come I do not see any Flowering cherry bonsai or even pre-bonsai material. All I can find is a few nurseries who have the trees and some seed starter kits. I was thinking of getting a japanese flowering cherry tree or a Kwanzan cherry tree. But I found a nursery who has some trees 1 - 2 ft tall and a nursery with some seedling. Do these trees even make good bonsai or is there a reason you do not see any bonsai material for these trees?

Cherries are grown for bonsai, but there's some differences in opinion of what a cherry is.
Prunus cerasifiera for instance is called a cherry plum but to me they're cherries.
Also, cherries have mainly white flowers that you can find on a lot of trees.

They can make bonsai as good as any other plum or apricot. But their growth is courser and it can take a long time for the bark to roughen up.

I am growing some cheery trees. May be 10 years or so but might try them out!

Cherries are grown as bonsai but mainly by experienced specialists.
True cherries are a pain in the ass as bonsai. Not even real easy as landscape trees.
They are affected by a number of pests and diseases so keeping them alive is not easy.
Flowers on cherry bonsai require diligent pruning so as to encourage flowering growth and they don't always bud easily after pruning.

Just a couple of reasons you don't see many good cherry bonsai. Many are started but few last the distance or make the grade. Definitely not beginner species.
