Unknown Paph. Got a grab bag of 8 from a pal who couldn’t get them to bloom again. This is a progression starting December 5 until today.

My birthday is in the middle of the week, so we went out today for lunch at our favorite BBQ place in St. Louis and to the Botanical Garden for the orchid show. I thought I'd share some pictures.orchid1.jpgorchid 2.jpgorchid3.jpgorchid4.jpgorchid5.jpg

Phal. Chia Shing 'Hot Kiss' is one of the "big foot" or Pansy style Phalaenopsis. The lip is wide and flattened out, making the flower look different from the normal form. I like it. That color is the really quite intense, velvety even. Nice. You got a nice one there.

Thanks, I picked it because I had never seen one quite like it.

Nice Hamamelis 'Diane', I always thought the red color in catalogs was photoshopped. Actually looks really red. Nice.

A "terrestrial" orchid, Stenosarcos Vanguard. This is a hybrid between a Florida native orchid, that grows in the grasslands of the Everglades and a forest floor growing species from Peru. Flowers stems are about 18 to 20 inches tall (half meter). The flower bracts are a nice reddish orange, the little tiny white lip sticking out of the bracts is the lip of the rather small flowers. The bracts last several months. Flowers last only a few days to a couple weeks. It has nice spotted leaves, much like a hosta. The foliage is evergreen, unlike it Florida parent, which goes dormant. Easy to grow, if not allowed to dry out. I alternated between flash and no flash, color is a little off, somewhere between the two.

I just spotted a jonquil at the bottom of my cherry-tree, and there are lots of violets too now. There's a place where I found some white ones a couple of years ago, but they seem to have disappeared...
Surprisingly, I haven't seen any of the snowdrops in my garden so far. I must go for a walk by the riverside this weekend, there's usually a white carpet of snowdrops in some places.

While most of you are getting late winter and early spring flowers we have late summer here. Flowering has slowed a lot but there is always something colourful to look at.

Indigofera decora - summer wisteria but, as in many common names, not related.

Hibiscis trionum - one of the few annual hibiscus - also an Australian native I believe.

Bought this Witch Hazel intermedia Diane last year especially for its flowers. Been excited to show them off for awhile

I think this is “Birgit” and not Diane. Diane is orange/yellow. Not that the name matters, it’s lovely.

Some more from late summer in the far south

Naked ladies herald the end of summer and have recently started to flower.

Not sure of the current nomclemature for this one as it has had a number of revisions - Baeckea, Sannantha, Babingtonia? but lots of tiny white flowers and good for bonsai.

While not strictly a garden plant I like the structure of these mistletoe flowers and the small birds love them.
