Hope you don't mind me asking a question here, didn't think it warrented a separate thread.
Got these two, fuchsia magellanica gracilis. Wanting to put them in my front garden. Would they be best in pots or in the ground? Front garden is currently just lawn but was thinking about pulling some up and turning into a flower bed
Unsure which would be best, as I know they don't like frost
If you want to develop the fuchsia for bonsai, then I would keep them in pots that you can move indoors on frost nights. Sometimes trunks survive freezing, often the trunks do not. They should be root hardy, and come back from the roots no problem.
I'd keep them in large pots, move them to avoid hard Frost's and freezes, as necessary, as it takes some time to develop the caliper, trunk diameter, needed for bonsai.
Below, a western North America Opuntia species. It's not O. humifusa, it's not the locally native Michigan species. I forget which species it actually is. Got it from a collector of hardy cacti. It is in a 10 gallon pot, filled with gravel, no soil. Has spent 4 winter's in that spot. Leaf pads lay flat for winter, then stand back up for summer. Kind of fun.
