Ok, completed all the cuttings from my 1st batch (well 2 batches actually but 1 batch only produced 1 seedling...).
I will let the other seedlings grow in the sowing tray for the rest of the year...

I also took a cutting out that I made 3 weeks ago to check for new root growth, no roots yet, is that normal? It looks healthy...

pic 1: 29 cuttings from batch 1, 1 from batch 2
pic 2: the remaining seedlings, in the back there's another tray full of seedlings that will be worked on in a few weeks.

Normally you should have roots I guess. Still being green without indicates good conditions and time will hopefully do the rest.

Alright, I filled 2 trays with pots of seedling cuttings, 72 cuttings in total. That should be all of them for this year. I left the other 100+ seedlings in the sowing trays. They can grow there until I decide what to do with them.

I checked 2 seedling cuttings from the first batch... and found roots on both of them! Only 1/8 of an inch roots but still :)

These look really good. Ive got mine in full sun now and be fertilized. They are starting to grow like weeds. This looks like a great start!!

Ok, looks like we're in business! Roots starting to come out of the bottom of the pots and the seedlings are starting to grow. Added some fertilizer teabags.
Still following all the steps from Bonsai Today #20. I do have to add some extra time with all steps. Might be the climate ;)

With this un-Belgian summer we're having this year, no rain in 2 months and temperatures constantly around or above 30°C/86°F, all trees demand a little extra care. My JBP seedlings however are loving it.
So far 5 of the 72 cuttings didn't make it but the rest seems to be doing ok. Some a little better than other which is normal I suppose.

My table with JBP seedlings, the cuttings are in the first 2 big black trays. Non-cuttings are in the back.

A few trays with seedlings I didn't cut. I put some of them in their own nursery container. I will keep those last ones together with the ones in the smallest tray (mikawa seedlings). The rest of them I'm giving away to anyone who'll have them.

And a close-up of some of the cuttings. Not very big yet but they're getting there :)

Not to worry, it's 90 to 85 and because of the rain we hit
a 69 deg.F at night.
The seedlings in the pottery cups are handling the rain
well and if we got the soil mix correct, they can handle
the water easily.

Should be moving towards root bound in the cups.

Wish we had your problem, but the rain is in full swing.
Controlled watering is easier on the nerves.
All the best of healthy growing.

Summer has been colder than the norm here. But this week it came in full force. We hit the maximum temperature ever recorded in Portugal yesterday with 47.8C or 118F

Not sure how ya'll get those huge seedlings, I have about 150 of them and this is one of my biggest cuttings, only about 3" or 7,5cm tall. They do have big compact growth with low first branching. I hope they grow a bit more before fall kicks in. Must be a climate thing I guess.

my seedlings are about 5-6 inches but have been that tall since july. they have really slowed since then and have started to push buds on top. Some are starting to elongate but not much. I have had a ton of heavy rain now for months though. Think i need to move them to get more sun.

Remember, it's not tall, but the trunk to height ratio.
Tall can also be harder wood and does not trunk thicken.
Keep observing for the magical ones.

The fatter trunks.

Good Day

Time for the fall update:

These are my biggest 6, still only about 3" high but very dense foliage.
Does anyone know if it would be useful to keep them under growights in my basement this winter or should I better leave them outside? (still got 65 cuttings and 100+ non-cuttings so maybe I can try something out anyway…)

Can you say "side branch"... ?
