I thought I would give a quick update on this one !

I did bare root it a few days after I posted this thread and I broke the top branch while doing this, it inside of the trunk didn't look healthy at all where it broke, all black like if only had one live vain or something.

Anyway I bare-root it and repot it in a well draining soil, for the first couple of week I thought it was dead, the only 2 or 3 leaves it had on died/dried but I kept on nursing it, watering it when the soil was dry and the mild spring helped with high humidity and mild temperatures I think

Today buds are appearing everywhere, looks like the tree is saved and is happy again. 2 more weeks and we will know for sure

Updates, I know you guys told me no to lose my time but I did invest time in this tree :)

the tree is doing great and it is leafing out very fast !

For such a fighter I really don't want to throw it so my options (i think) are

1. I layer it at the base of the reverse tapper to make a double trunk
2. I shop it under the reverse tapper and make something out of this :)

I'm all ears

First of all, I meant no thread hijack here, I just want to share what I did to my pomegranate, maybe it can help akhater a little bit.

I've been following this thread for a little while, pretty much learning from it. I also have a pomegranate on which I did an air layer in the main trunk about a month ago. Here's a sketch of what I've done to it

UZgSL.png

Pretty much, anything above the curve line was removed, the 2 branches with the arrows were also removed, and the airlayer was done just below the last branch. Since I dug it up (about 9 months ago) it went from %100 leave less and now it's full of new branches and leafing out like crazy. I will post a current image as soon as there's some sunlight outside

2 things I can see on the above images from akhater are the following:

Why airlayer a piece of a straight trunk? Should't we try to look for some movement first and then do the airlayer below the movement if need it?

By personal experience, I've learned that when you airlayer, you need to have some very clean and straight cuts, maybe even some little chamfer on the top cut and all these its just to help and promote new roots, I can see some very rough cuts on that airlayer, I don't know what the most experience members think about it but at the end it might not take any roots?

You are not hijacking at all, I am posting to get feedback and learn

1. I never remove anything before layering, I guess the tree needs as much load as possible for the layer to work i cut while removing the layer not when doing it
2. to answer the why layer a straight trunk well the answer is simply I only have a straight trunk ! I was going to cut down to the stem in all cases and start over with the first 1 or 2 inches so I thought I'd layer the top before maybe i can do something with this double trunk.
