Found this Chinese Elm at North Dayton Garden Center, a nice selection of plants especially if you like everything shaped in a Pom-Pom Topiary liek style. :p
I seen it two days ago, got a price and went home to think about it, a practice I try to employ anymore when buying another plant or Bonsai.

I picked it up and Rick had trimmed it for me , examining it I seen it had tons of intertwined branches forming the ball shape he enjoys. It looked like it could be worked with, the trunk is great, snaking back with great movement and two branches sticking up with a ball of green on them. I opened it up, actually unwinding much of it and wiring some branches out to give it a more fuller look. I set the tree up a tad more to show the trunk better, IMHO.

Next, a new pot! I will probably turn it about 35 degress to the right to further expose the trunk line when I get a new pot for it. I am looking at an eggshell pot?

Nice find Ed! For a front, I like the second photo of the bunch the "side" shot. Or the last pic, I like that one too. This will look great in an eggshell.

I like the 2nd pic too...especially turned a few degrees counter clockwise. Current front is a no-no for me.

I have to agree on pic #2. The current front looks like the tree is running away from the viewer.

Congrats on your ability to see beyond the original presentation. You noticed a cool trunk and reworked a very dreadful top. It's a great way to buy trees cheap. Most people don't have the vision or willingness to take something from point A to point B.

I too, might have walked past the topiary section and not stopped to take a look!

Good job Ed, it's looking sweet. The pot is cool.

The trunk on this turned solid green from the constant rain here in Florida. I seen Brian's post in a thread I posted called Spring Excitement in the General discussion forum showing his Beech with the white trunk. It reminded of the way I used to do my Elms and Ficus many years ago before a guy told me it did not look natural and I stopped doing it. Brian's picture inspired me to try it again as I always loved the white trunk and how it made the leaves look so much more green and made them stand out. So after trimming the heck out of it, brass wire brushing the green off the trunk I hit it with Lime Sulphur and am very happy that I seen the post by Brian Van Fleet as I have not thought about this in almost 2 decades !

Again thanks to Brian Van Fleet for the inspiration and reminder of something I had lost!

I like it and I like the fact that the branches are twisted. That makes them in harmony with the trunk.
Try to style it a bit more crazy...with some branches twisted and going down to one side, and lighten the crown.
