Hi Leo, actually there is 3 trees hammered together here. the plan was to use two only and wedge them together with a split down the middle, to give the impression of a tree with massive girth that had its trunk split by a lightening crack. i wasnt keen on the split and decided to get them closer and cover in the hole with a small trunk at the back. it all flows together quite will, i made sure it would look decent from different angles.
the trees have been growing together in a basket for a while from nursery stock.
no plans to fuse them i think they fit snugly enough and give the appearance of a hornbeam with a fluted trunk and wide girth.. the tree went into the pot as one solid unit nailed together and over time the roots will fuse. parts of callus may swell and meet in parts of the cut areas.

Quick update,
I removed the the far right trunk after the last photos, i didnt like how the trunk appeared from the back...

Got a bit of wire on, next season will be all about growing out the left side of the tree

I guess i could even remove the low bits on the tree and go with a high canopy...this is a virt with low bits rubbed out, shows off the nice flaring trunk base better

The trunk is the show stopper so I agree!

Cheers buddy, yep just needs time now, but even after one season of growing together and a bit of callus beginning to form, the planting will be more established, the back especially the smallest trunk will blend in better.

actually, if you look closely, bearing in mind this was done in sept, you can see where the paste is starting to split on the main trunk, thats because callus tissue is already forming🧐

I hear often people saying Hornbeam dont heal well, but actually they will readily produce callus tissue,
I didnt use any sealant on the hollow in the main trunk,
look closely and you can see the edges rolling in

I recently posted another one where after 3 years in the ground the chop is nearly healed over.

Very cool. This gives me some ideas I want to try. I think I’ll use cutting grown stock from the same tree to make sure the foliage is all the same.

Great progression!
