I'll call this recently collected bougainvillea macy's #4. the tree was 37 inches tall arriving at my house one week ago. it was quickly reduced to 21 inches, planted in a box and left to grow. with new buds showing, I decided today to take a closer look at the tree. the result of the examination pointed out a number of highly visible defects that needed to be corrected. in my mind, I graded the quality of macy's #4 to be a D, on a scale of A being best and F being bad. two hours later most of the serious defects had been corrected. a 5 inch diameter branch stub blocking the view of the apex has been reduced, smoothed out and hollowed. this improved trunk taper dramatically. the large unsightly jin near the bottom left of the trunk had been slimmed down, carved and made hollow. a large unsightly debarked area on the saddle of the trunk has been made into uro. the various hollow places were connected by additional carving making for a eye catching hollow trunk. the work is done for now. the wet wood will dry before it is sanded and detailed carved. meanwhile the new buds will grow into a beautiful canopy in due time. at this point Macy's D will become Macy's A.

best wishes, sam

macy #4 (cont)

the dust flies. the beaver and kaizen bits from europe work good. the jin on the left is shaped and hollowed. uro are created in two other places on the trunk. left side, front 1, right side, front 2. see the new taper.

best wishes, sam
