Repotted a maple clump yesterday.
These were individual seedlings that popped in in my yard in 2019. Last year I bare rooted them and tied 5 together with a 1mm aluminum wire. The wire is mostly embedded now, but I did pull some if it out.
One trunk died early on.....so its the dreaded number 4 😱.... I was thinking about knocking it down to 3, but might just stick with 4 for now.
Looks like the rootbase is forming nicely.

The wire was above the roots, you can see the line it left on the largest trunk....it'll be fully disappeared by next year.
Thanks!

I know several with even number tree clumps. Bill V has a blog on one of his...Judy is another. We can choose to embrace something or not. I have no issue with the number 4. Makes it unique...and I've seen clumps of 4 before so natural.
I totally agree. Thanks!

My plan for now is to get that root base going in the right direction, then plant it into a larger container, or maybe in the ground...., and let it gain some grith for a few years.
....and go form there.
