2 years ago, I removed tip needles to see what happens, it slowed spring growth considerably. Though I pruned this years test you can see in the top right, the slow bud between the 2 green tufts. Those few needles missing is enough to cause a good balancing. As those buds are near identical in strength and activity as the lower buds.

This early fall, after buds are identifiably set, I will purposefully remove between one and 4 rows of needles to see if I can fully balance it. Along with the usual bit of drastic removal, which is becoming less drastic, as it moves into this place of initial set structure.

I removed a lot more than the usual one large branch. Moving into that next stage I reckon.

Before.

First time something so thin made it out. First time I've seen roots this year, due to more shade mostly.

It's a waning crescent moon.

Terrible pic that shows the seperation well.

Mostly just clip and grow, I'm beginning to believe more and more that simply pruning for good branch structure allows the tree to fill the space it needs to fill which looks a bit more natural and with less work. I reckon if one HAD to wire, it would be much less work after this process.

Top down with some mucamego.

Something about absolute minimal work to define the seperate pieces, trunk/branches and foliage, then just bringing them together with wire.
