Had a bunch of acer palmatum seeds so threw a bunch in a few different mediums to test. Have way more than I know what to do with but should be fun!

The seeds thrown in a colander carelessly with a thin layer of potting soil are growing the fastest.

I've had really good luck with palmatums down here. I started a clump this year too. Disregard the yaupon in the back that suffered from our freeze this year - I see green on it now though! Not sure why all photos from my phone import sideways when uploading to the site via PC.

Nice!... I actually just bought one of those 14 dollar Acer P Atro seedlings from HirtS.. it was shipped from Texas.. I was pleasantly surprised..

Just curious, mostly.

:) - Just trying to thicken them up a bit before arranging. These are the same seeds @cmeg1 mentioned in his post the other day from FW Schumacher. Small Seed Acer P. They did start sprouting in the fridge after 50 days. Pretty wild! I'm going to move another 60 to some cells this week too. Here's a pic from January 24th of them in the stew. I'd say at least 98% sank.

Yes I cannot wait to plant mine.Outside no less.Guess I need patience now.
New idea for seedling layers....just put more gro wool over the ringbarks when I proceed.........this stuff can go weeks without water, but I got to say there is air in the mix here.

Got another 60 in some cells for a total of 120. Still have probably another 150-200 growing in the trays that I'll let go the rest of the year and figure out what to do with later.

The seedlings I didn't touch got off to a quicker start than those I fiddled with early on. The fiddlers are now catching up. Learned something at least -- no need to really transfer these in the first year.

Still getting good growth with these. The lower ones are getting shaded out but that's okay. I still have more than I need. They get direct sun until about 1pm. Fertilizing with fish + kelp once a week.

Winter update. Some of these are pretty small since they were thrown into small pots. The larger ones had more room to grow / escape in the ground. I removed most of the leaves on these as they were still clinging on.

It will be interesting to see if the ones kept in confined spaces for the first year will have better internode length vs the ones that extended quickly. Still a long ways to go!

Awesome! Any conclusions on soil? Your first post said a thin layer of potting soil was growing the quickest, did that holdup throughout the season?

@mj_barb The ones in the soil that I didn't remove and place in the cells grew the second fastest. The ones that were in a thin plastic tray that escaped into the ground ended up the largest, which makes sense. I still need to address those ones! Interestingly, the ones that didn't grow the tallest are small but actually have really small internodes. So there might be some benefit to that as well. Time will tell!
