Nice little tree!
At this point I’d let it grow for a while and then follow your clip and grow plan. Mine hated getting wired.
let it grow a while, take a picture, draw a picture, drink a beer, think, clip. Repeat.
also, mine like to be in rapidly draining soil, but like to be watered a lot.
Don’t be too put off by periodic temper tantrums and leaf dropping.
they usually come right back if kept warm, watered, and still.
good luck and enjoy!

Here's a progression of mine. Her name's Camellia😊 and she's a drama queen. I'm glad I dug into the archives to see older pictures cuz I kind of dig the 2013 look. Maybe this year when I work on it I'll thin it out much more then I normally do once it starts looking better into summer. The last pic is today. Looks messy, I know but I ain't touching it until later in the season.

Can't go much about the dreaded S curve except maybe turn it into a quirky cascade as shown on some site. I think it was Bonsai Mary or something like that...

@Keyon .

do some reading up on South China and zones.

The Fukien tea is not tropical, needs a rest or in 4 years
you might be saying bye bye.

I would suggest you get a Yaupon or 3 - Illex from your area.
Good Day
Anthony

*Please put your South Georgia in with your Avatar - Welome !!!!

I didn't know that. Is this from your experience or can you quote a source or post a link to a site that has this info? I'm not doubting your word. Just curious about it.

@Keyon ,

@Mayank ,

if the Japanese Maple does not go through a winter's dormancy
the tree dies after 4 years.
The Fukien Tea supplied world wide is from South China.
China has no Tropical zone on the mainland.

A tropical tree has a limit of 55 deg.C day or night

The fukien tea is listed as zone 8 to 9 as a shrub in the ground.
In a bonsai pot ypu have to shift 1 or 2 zones down - say 9 or 10 or 11
That zonal range still has frost.

Also in the Bonsai pot drops at night to 68 deg.F with highs of 90 deg.F
can kill them.
With these limitations we got rid of them.
Good Day
Anthony

* Grew them since 1980

Welcome to Crazy!

I like the orientation in the pot.

Though where it meets the soil, you'll either want to make it grow more roots, or make sure it don't. Unless it gets fugly on you.

And ...try not to get to Fukien attached to it!
Sometimes they die!

Like Mayank said, Carmona can be a drama queen of a bonsai.

Something I would add to Anthony's advice is: don't remove a branch in the same year as repotting/root pruning. Or as someone else said "no two major insults in the same year". Some trees can take it, this one can't, in my experience. What a tree to start on! I don't know why they sell carmona as starter bonsai. Maybe because they have attractive small flowers, but they attract green flies and other residents. I spent a long time removing all the tiny flowers on mine. That seems to keep the leaves healthier.
In the meantime, get one of the trees that Anthony suggests, or, a cheap Chinese elm which is much easier to keep alive and play with clip&grow.

Hi Keyon,

I don't know about the advice above but I have a couple here in South Florida that have done fine for years. To be honest, I have kinda neglected them for some time now but they just keep on going. They get plenty of light and water, and seem happy for it...

Best wishes...
