Here are some of my really crappy trees as described by some. I thought you might find it educational that you too can have some really crappy trees that don't cost $2800 each to get started. In fact only one cost more than $50, most $20 or under. All of them are from nursery trees most in three gallon containers. This particular Mugo was three gallon nursery in training about ten years, I forget. Started a restyle two years ago. The tree on the right was what it looked like, the tree on the left is what it looked like two years ago. The trunk in the middle is obviously the trunk and bark detail to his tree.

Some more questionable trees. This is another redesibn project started about two years ago, and a couple of other questionable trees, the first another Mugo Pine and the last a Shimpaku Juniper.

Geeze, you're right.
I'll pm you my address as I'd like to become a collector of "crappy trees". :D

Beautiful trees. Honestly, how could anyone say otherwise?

hmm are you being sarcastic trees look beautiful in my opinion tell you what if you really think they are so crappy how bout you send them to me

buy 50 dollar trees and you'll have a 50 dollar bonsai

Really? I have been offered, just recently, $2000 for a tree I developed from a $15.00 tree. I don't buy the trees the way you see them I buy the raw material and develop them to their glorious crappyness.

people pay 2000 for 15 dollar trees all the time. your tree could be the exception but for the most part you buy cheap material youll get a cheap bonsai.

Because that's what you believe does not make it the truth. I have worked with small Scots Pines for a couple of years to develop them and truned around to sell them for $125.00 once potted, pruned, wired and styled. Did I mentioned I payed $.50 a piece for them.

that could just be a testament of your business or marketing skills more than it is a testament to the quality of the tree.

Mystogan: you know its people like you who give bonsai a bad name. quit being a snob and take your attitude somewhere else! these trees are very nice as everyone can see. i dont know why you want to come on here and act like someone has to buy an expensive tree to get an expensive bonsai....that makes no since...all trees start as seeds or cuttings or layers....your reasoning isnt worth the time it takes to read it!

On a good note: Vance, your trees are proof someone does not have to sell their house to get nice or at the least promising stock to turn into good bonsai. I have no doubt the people who bought your trees did so because they thought it was a beautiful example of what all of us here on this forum do. I hope you wont think anything of what that other guy says. i think he was being just rude!

i agree with you willo i all nice trees start from noting it is the care and love you give them that makes them beautiful, i have bought expensive trees but it is one of my dreams to create my own beautiful trees from nothing or 15-50 dollar crappy trees

his post make it seem that its possible to buy a 50 dollar nursery tree then train it for 12 years or so and be of the same caliber tree as one that was 2800 and trained for the same amount of time. hardly doubt it

Yes-Sir-ee, I call them Crapsai. Just remember people who are crappy together are Happy together. A crap in time saves nine. If it weren't for crap I'd have no crap at all.

Jocking aside, I appreciate the support I have received from you and thank you for taking the time to comment, even mistogen. If it were not for your point of view we wouldn't have the phrase: Down in front!

I never suggested that, it was you that suggest a $20 dollar tree will never be worth more than $20 dollars.

While I'm thinking about it; did I offend your in another life? This seems personal.

With the sardonic tone of the original post (and the title), it was to be expected that this thread has gone in this direction. Vance has been around bonsai forums long enough to know what he's going to get with this sort of post.

Nice trees. Looks like the roots could use some work on most of the conifers. (That's one of the downsides of dealing with nursery material though.)

Very nice crappy trees I must say. I have always wanted to read about your technics on how you start and develop material from 3 gal nursery stock--did you ever write about this? I seem to remember rumors you were going to.
