After a long day at work I like to roam the garden with a flashlight and check out all what’s growing. Inevitably I arrive at the small bonsai area I’ve been curating. It’s pretty cool what you find at night compared to during the day.

I don’t like to spray insecticides or herbicides, unless the situation gets real bad, in hopes of maintaining a homeostatic environment. I do use the smash technique for worms and caterpillars on my bougainvilleas and other targeted trees. All known invasive species, such as the Cuban tree-frog and cactoblastis worms as I’ve been observing recently, are eradicated as humanely as possible.

One of my favorite bugs is the aphid lion. Pretty bad ass little machines. Whenever I find them, I relocate them to my bonsai area as there are all sorts of aphids targeting my different trees this time of year. Tonight I snapped a photo of the next generation of lions gestating on a crepe myrtle pre-bonsai rather heavily occupied by aphids:

Hopefully the anoles don’t find them before they get a good slaughter in.
