About 100 seeds to soak in a 20:1 water to hydrogen peroxide mix.

On 4/8, I pulled seeds from the refrigerator and got started planting. Here’s my seeds as I got them out.

I poked holes in a plastic heavy weight tray.

Then I planted some in perlite and some in small pumice.

On the other side of my tray I planted non stratified seeds, only soaked for a few days then planted. I’m interested in the results of both the medium and the cold strat vs not.

As of this morning, about 20 have sprouted. Mostly from the perlite stratified side.

Some updates...

The strongest growing. The stem was not cut and the seed was started in a soil pellet designed for veggies.

Probably my strongest that has had its stem cut. 9419DEC5-375D-47E1-8100-6B19DD51EFA2.jpeg

The rest of the pack.

Some updates.

I guess I should be happy with the results...I mean I did grow pines from seed...that seems like an accomplishment. But I feel the results could be better. I guess I should expect to become better in year 2 and that I have much to learn.

No cut to stem:

Stem cut: (my stem cuts are super weak, IMHO)

My bed of uncut, unpotted, JBPs. Not sure what to do with these.

Current count:
Potted, no stem cut; 4 (all growing strong)
Potted, stem cut: 23 (only 6 or 7 look like they will make it)
Bed of JPBs: (as pictured above) 50+

I’m thinking of taking 3-4 of these and planting them this fall in my grow box. I was thinking of cutting them out like you would a brownie or a piece of cake, like in a square that includes 3-4 seedlings. Then planting all 3-4 together and then thinning them out next spring to the strongest. Treating them almost like a vegetable growing in the garden...survival of the fittest! What issues do you see with that strategy? I figure if the roots can settle for 4-6 weeks, then it becomes a good place to overwinter. Then I have one growing in my grow bed going forward that I can compare to the rest of the crop. Thoughts? image.jpg

They probably have ridiculously long tap roots, but not a big deal if you trim them in proper time....I would think Spring.Zone 6a is pretty cold winter.I would wait til Spring because they are going into an important phase in Autumn of pushing a strong terminal bud for next year. They really strengthen up in Autumn, first year seedlings do that in Autumn and change into a proper mini tree....I would not interrupt this metamorphosis.
