I’ve decided to choose my original choice for the “not a contest”. It’s an unknown variety of azalea that I collected from my yard. The tree is older than I am by a lot lol. It had sustained quite a bit of damage so I decided to dig it up. I split it in two but found the other half unusable for landscape and bonsai purposes and discarded it. When I collected it I did not use the right tools to cut it back which is why the large cut at the top is cracked. I’m going to cut it back when it’s done blooming. The larger trunk is going to be cut back quite far to a suitable leader. I know very little about azaleas in general so this will be a great way to learn about the growth patterns, root growth, and soil requirements. I’m thinking about keeping the dead wood as a little decoration for now but it will probably be removed in the future. Any tips would be greatly appreciated as I will probably kill the plant in a few months without them?. I’m working on creating bonsai soil with the limited resources I have. The plants stay alive in the normal ground dirt but don’t do very well

IMHO, the last thing that you want to do is remove that dead-wood until you know for certain that you don't want to keep it. I don't know anything about azaleas, but that dead-wood is a nice contrasting feature to the flowers... as a guess, I'd say that you have a long-term project here that could be VERY nice if you take your time with it.
