Well I'm headed to Dallas for five days from Saturday to Wednesday next week for business. I will have Saturday and Sunday to myself. Anyone have any suggestions for bonsai nurseries or any general sightseeing?

Not much in the way of bonsai nurseries. No where to see high quality bonsai unless you find someone's private collection.

Sorry i will try to be more helpful. The botanical gardens are nice although I have never been in the winter. Sunshine miniature trees is ok if you need a tree fix, but its mostly malsi. The Dallas bonsai club has meetings on the 1st Saturday of each month. If your there on that Saturday you can go even if your not a member. http://www.bonsaisocietyofdallas.com usually will have workshops and demos ect. The website has details.

Seeing how you're from Florida, you might appreciate the tropicals at Tea Garden Bonsai Nursery in Arlington Tx if you care to drive that far out. There are stunning huge Ficus, quite a few Fukien tea,(especially the owners large one) a few large JBP, a few chinese elm and more. I maintain all their bonsai but can't get over there but 2 or 3 times a month since I live about 50miles from there. The owners are Vietnamese and have imported some bonsai from there as well. Most trees are very large but they do have some small ones also in case you would like to take one back with you.:)

I bought an azalea and a couple of pots there last Saturday. Sorry I did not mention it, because its a bit out of the way. I bought a little baby to see if I could keep alive in our climate. image.jpg

Good luck with the azalea Jeremy, I never had much luck with them. Couldn't figure out whether I was over or under watering them. Always gave them plenty of acidic fertilizer but to no avail, they always yellowed out. I'll be going there tomorrow to do what I usually do there, haven't been there since the 1st of Jan.

The Arlington bonsai store mentioned is ok, but there is a guy in Fort Worth that works out of his home with a nice collection if you wanted to drive that far. It's maybe 20 or 30 mins from DFW Airport. It's called Sanderson Creek Bonsai. Just google it.

If your in downtown Dallas, Fountain Place is a pretty nice landscape design worth seeing, and then there's always Dealy Plaza and the Book Depository Bldg.

Most of the azaleas grown for landscape here thrive under oak trees and pines. I have always heard that azaleas don't respond well to high amounts of fertilizers. If that's of any help.
