I picked this up at the Maryland Bonsai Assn. auction for $30. It is American holly, right? It is a project, but I was thinking along with the hemlocks it’ll round out the native collection some more. Now I have some studying to do.. maybe try to get it into a flat next spring and work in some soil similar to what works with the hemlock? Full sun?

I see them in full sun offer in landscapes and they seem to do fine, although they are an understory tree in our region.
Cool find, definitly a project.....I plan to dig up a small one from a friends property in fall.
One of my favorite native trees.

Ilex opaca? A little better shot. I know not really respected in bonsai, but I like it.

Yes.
I've tried a couple in the past....both nursery material and digging a large stump.
No success so far.....I think I removed too many roots at the initial reduction.
