I collected the bald cypress the middle of February, it was about 12' tall. I cut it back to 18", it did not have many roots when I dug it up. I put it on the back of my property where a small pond over flows when it rains and stays wet most of the time. The water you see was just there today after half day of rain. I have been checking often to see if any buds had come out, as I was not too sure if it was / is going to make it. Well today I found about 4, so maybe it will make it. You can see it behind the Dawn Redwood in the second picture. I got the Dawn Redwood when I went to Brussels and thought it would be intresting to see how both of them do in the wet. The DR just started budding last week.
Thought it may be interesting to see,,,,

I'm all goose pimpley. There is nothing like seeing the first buds of collected material. Like a wedding night or ground hog day...I don't remember which.

I collected a 40 year old Indian hawthorn 2 weeks ago. It is pushing new leaves right now. That does not give me confidence yet. I have had plenty of trees push new growth in spring and then die. I hope this one makes it it as it has a awesome tapering twisty trunk. My point is keep giving it hyper care.

Edit. Just re read the post. What ever happens happens replanting in the swamp. The bald S will probably do fine. Maybe ...

Yes new buds are awesome when you trunk chop something. I did an azalea this year and buds all over are about to leaf out. .

I understand they may not make it just because the push the new bud. One of my first tree to collect was an azeala (http://bonsainut.com/forums/showthread.php?4981-Azalea-Graft&p=65016#post65016) I was very excited when it bloomed in the spring, but it died before summer was over. Looking back, it may have been my well water that killed it or as you said and reading stated, the buds my just be stored in the tree and come out even though the tree is not really doing well. But it is still fun to watch, I will post progress later in the year.

Thanks for your replies.

Only time will tell. These guys are like weeds. If you see buds. This guy will grow crazy

Just dont let it dry out and it should be fine.
