have had this stock premna material of unknown variety for a couple of years. rough work was done on the trunk in the past, but for the most part the tree has been left to grow. unfortunately the foliage is large, rather floppy and does not reduce (like microphylla or serratifolia) when pruned.
today, branches were cut back to stubs and about 30 scions of small leaf premna (serratifolia) were grafted onto the stump. basically rebuilding a new tree from scratch. with luck the grafts will take , after which the tree will be left to grow unrestrained to acquire branch thickness, taper and ramification before styling. the new foliage will be a dark glossy green, with the capability to reduce in size to a grain of rice. sharing some pictures.
bare stump before grafts. places where new scions will be grafted
best wishes, sam
