Grimmy, what happens when you rush a new species into a bonsai pot.

Grimmy,

here is a Xanthoxylum [ local species ]

Grew very well, so much so it was potted. Alas, too soon and it lost all but two branches.
Now it is outside in the grow trough trying to make a come back and heal a great many holes from lost branches.

Lesson learnt.
Good Day

Ed,

this may be a situation similar to the West Indian or Barbados Cherry [ Malpighia e.]
Able to live in lowland Venezuela and all the way up to Lower Texas and naturally existing within that range of say zone 13 to zone 9.

It's a weed down here, and grows easily from cuttings. So I will see if a few of the older Bonsai friends want to try it and send up some cuttings, through legal importation.
Fairly fast growing and trunk thickens nicely.

It also exists as a mallsai, called Szechuan pepper and is obviously another cousin, from China and at I believe zone 7 to 8.
The ones from China are spectacular and a natural for the weeping style.
Good Day
Anthony

Shame to loose the branches but I have done similar with other species and worse. I found this Import Ban Information on Wiki regarding Sichuan pepper - The import ban was only loosely enforced until 2002.[13] In 2005, the USDA and FDA lifted the ban, provided the peppercorns are heated to around 70 °C (158 °F) to kill the canker bacteria before import.

Grimmy,

the xantho..... was collected from the drain where the roadworkers chop everything down. It is not the same as the Chinese type, and I am not sure if you can eat those "berries" chuckle.
For the record, when collecting it's stuff from drains and seedlings under trees, and about pencil thick or thinner.

Thank you very much for the information on the peppercorms for consumption. Amazed you took the time.

The Chinese type has finer leaves.

I wonder if it is the same as zandoxylum...since that one is called also sichuan paper.
They are very popular in japan, and I have several, all in pots.
Anything I should be aware of Anthony?

Hello Neli,

first in reponse to Ed - the prickly ash is also seen as an invasive, not an endangered plant.
Note response comes out of Florida.

Notice the plant also exists in Nigeria.

[3] Hardy to -15 deg C [ or should that be F ?]

Personal experience to share - none - still learning.

Suggestion, just try.

@HoneyHornet, I’m sorry to say that you may not get an answer — I don’t think Anthony has been in touch in some time, since COVID happened. And when I tried to contact GrimLore, recently, Carol83 sadly said that he’d passed away several years ago.

Here’s hoping that Anthony is alive & well, and touches base here on BNut soon — I’d like to ask him questions, too!
