Can both these be done at the same time without killing the tree? Its a Japanese maple

I wouldn't do both at the same time. Each is a very hard thing for the tree to recover from, and each are dependent on each other for the healing of the insult.


Cut off the top and you take away the motor to make new roots.

Girdle away the roots and you cut off the motor to make new branches.

I would allow two years in between each of those insults.
