This is a fairly old crab apple with 4" base and terrible rootage I bought for $40 last winter. I layered it on April 1 and separated it on June 24. I cut it back heavily to make a nice compact Japanese-style shohin with good taper. The long branches will be pruned back next year and I will add to this thread then.

I placed one of those round felt liners on the soil and built up a mound of sphagnum moss and pumice. Worked really well and the felt made a nice flat base.
