Growing a tree from a stake cutting.

I was on youtube the other day and came across this video of a man cutting real thick branches from a regular sized elm tree. He would defoliate them completely and stick them in bonsai soil and a couple of months later they would start to bud and at that point you would have what seemed to be a mature tree with a thick trunk.
Has anyone here tried this? and if so do you think it would work on a trident maple?
I did ask this to the guy on youtube but no answer. By the way, he even did it with the trunk of a large elm and it worked as well. Videos are in spanish though.
