Growing US live oaks in the UK?

I’m a huge oak fan and have several European evergreen oaks Q. Suber and Q. Ilex which cope very well in my southern UK climate. Keen to try Q. Virginiana and Q. Agrifolia. Will they need more protection than the European Mediterranean trees?

I germinated some Q. Virginiana acorns last year and the seedlings have coped so far this winter in my cold frame unheated and without glass, just very sheltered. I am now trying some Q. Agrifolia. If they germinate should I treat these the same way?

Any advice appreciated.

Q agrifolia tolerate frosts no problem. I would not subject them to long periods of below-freezing temperatures.

Thanks. That’s nice to know. We don’t get too many periods of below freezing temps but it has been known.
