They call them growstones which supposedly provide great aeration in soil mixes. Since they're not expensive, I've ordered a bag to sample in a my bonsai mix. Any thoughts on it this stuff? Anyone have any experience with it?
Just bought a bag the size of a bag of mulch (it is 1 cubic foot) for $18 which seemed a bit high to me. My club is mixing soil this weekend and using DryStall instead.

hydroton might be cheaper, but hydroton floats. (hydroton can also be purchased for 80 bucks a cubic yard I believe)

I'm actually trying this (just lava rock) with hydroton and chicken grit and a little peat and some fish tank rock for weight and color, we will see if it saves some of my seedlings that re being bogged down by their seed starter mix.
