It is a cypress, just type in "trees at point lobos" and there are many of that tree.

I get an overwhelming sense of melancholy when I see this slightly different picture of the same tree.

It make me sad to think at some time that tree will simply fall into the ocean.

Also, makes me wish I had gone south of Santa Cruz on my one visit to California...

I have not been here in many years. I had a picture like this at bonsaiTALK back in 2001. I had forgotton about this tree. Need to make a trip back for sure. It seems that when I shot this tree there were not as many roots exposed over the cliff. That picture was four computers ago, lost forever......
