Did you scrape the wood you exposed in making the girdle?
You should.

Next time leave it open to the air for a few days (to make sure that any residual cambium cells are dead by simply desiccating them) before you bundle it up into your damp rooting medium.

Yeah, I always scrape the wood with a box cutter blade. I even wiped it down with rubbing alcohol. I'll try the air drying method next time though.
