I'm not digging up the tree. I want to keep in the ground for fruit. But I wanted to air layer a big branch that's on the top of the tree.

Did you scrape the wood you exposed in making the girdle?
You should.
Next time leave it open to the air for a few days (to make sure that any residual cambium cells are dead by simply desiccating them) before you bundle it up into your damp rooting medium.

Yeah, I always scrape the wood with a box cutter blade. I even wiped it down with rubbing alcohol. I'll try the air drying method next time though.
