Been in training about 20 yrs; but not much has been done in the way of refinement that I can tell. Weak growth, inner shaded branches have died back, roots have died back as well. Good thing these trees are tough.

What type of outside lighting do they require? Full sun, partial sun, shade?

I give mine full sun, and water and fertilize like mad, so in turn it grows like mad. They are very tough trees and they will tolerate shade to full sun. Looks like it on the recovery, nice tree!

They are very tolerant of most conditions above 40F and protected from wind/arid conditions. The owner had been kept this tree inside, far from a window for over a decade so it became weak enough to lose some branches. Too much intense sun and I find the foliage will turn light green/yellow. I aim for morning sun, afternoon shade. I think the original Hawaiian grower, Dave Fukumoto, develops his trees in high humidity partial to full sun

Filling back in; i'll need to replace the branch that had died on the left side.

Joedes3, you can really do anything/everything to these trees...they can go from full sun outside and be fine and also survive low light indoors. amazing little guys.

the only thing they don't like is lots of watering ...but nice tree!

Extremely high humidity, a ton of water... but not as much sun as you would think. There's enough rain and clouds in Hilo to make quite the difference in sunshine. His larger/older trees are placed in full sun, while the smaller trees in development (2-4" pots) are under a very sparse shade cloth. We went there back in June, as part of our Honeymoon.

Thanks brutha man, I like it too - came out nice. I returned it to the owner today, she's happy.

I have a rather large one in the works as well. They are tough as nails ,and make great bonsai once you get the trunk lines determined. Really the best tree for someone to kind learn on lol.
