Hi all, I was just out in the garden this morning spinning my trees. I noticed on a hawthorn on the side in shade a few of the leaf tips had turned brown. A quick google search turned up a leaf miner that does this. But it says if it's a miner you can see through the brown part a bit when you hold it up to the light. My leaves aren't see through at all when you hold them up so I don't think it's a leaf miner and I don't see any mining path. Tips are just brown.

It's a very small portion of the tree maybe 1/50th of the so it would be great to figure it out early. I spray every 15 days this time of the year for fungus so I doubt it's that although it's been raining here in NY for almost a week straight. This is my first year with hawthorn as a species. Pics below.

The pic of the tree is a very early spring picture it's MUCH fuller now.

My first guess since the leaf damage is consistent from leaf to leaf would be that the 3 full teabags of fertilizer on the tree now are leaching too much due to the heavy rain we've had for the past week.

Thanks
Ben

I've noticed a bit of leaf burn and or misfigured leaves as well and have been wondering if the rain has broken down the Fertalizer too fast. I'm using Green Dream.

Nice hawthorn by the way!!!

Thanks i really like this tree i had to do a lot of bidding to win it at a club auction. ;) Green dream is great its what i feed my conifers and the fertilizer I use on many of my trees in early spring. This tree has Dr. Earth Life fertilizer which is 5-5-5. The humates in it are from Leonardite which shouldn't burn but I guess the nitrogen in it could.

It's made of

Alaskan Fish Bone Meal, Alaskan Fish Meal, Alfalfa Meal, Feather Meal, Naturally-mined Potassium Sulfate, Aged Bat Guano, Kelp Meal, Colloidal Soft Rock Phosphate, Cotton Seed Meal, Seaweed Extract boosted with 11% micronized humic acids.

To much of anything even a good thing could be bad. I removed the tea bags since its supposed to rain all day and the brown tipped leaves. Lets see if that helps...

How much green dream did you use?

I can't speak to the Dr. Earth Life, but I've had problems last year, when I mixed too much humic acid in my liquid fert. I now only use it sparingly, and not as often. I too use green dream, and have never had trouble with that, no matter how much is applied, or when it rains too much. I actually use it during the rainy season primarily, as I won't be watering when it's rainy, and they still get fertilized.
I really love your hawthorn. I think you'd have had problems walking away with that one, if I'd been there to bid....:p

Thanks Judy, there was one other woman determined to get it my resolve beat hers. :) At the time it was leafless and had a few little red berries hanging from it. Quite the sight! It was in a brown japanese pot, I repotted it into this pot by Horst Heinzlreiter this spring. I don't expect any berries this year as it's energy into roots as I had to root prune pretty hard to get it into the horst pot.

3-4 tea spoons. I Hope not too much as I put it directly on top of the soil. It will be very hard to remove at this point.

Your trees are in grow boxes right? That's what I remember from the pics, 3-4 tsp isn't that much for a large grow box or growing pot.

I do not believe it is cedar hawthorn rust because it is just the tips of the leaves that are browning out and there are no other spots on the rest of the leaves. However, I did notice a few branches with cankers at the end of last winter but I was unaware that they should be trimmed off and removed.

Man, that is one cool tree. I found a whole copse of hawthorne near my school, I'm gonna sneak some airlayers on it and hopefully walk away with a few cool ones. Do you know if yours is natural or if that bend was wired? it looks natural to me...

Looks natural to me too I'm not sure if he wired it young or not. I sold the tree before moving to the west coast so sadly it's no longer in my collection. ;(

Me too Judy!! I heard you almost became the proud owner of this amazing tree.?. Thankfully I was able to tend to and ultimately ship it to its new owner. Honestly this was the highlight of my 2013 bonsai summer!! Now I am on a quest to find decent hawthorn material.

Yeah Emrys, it just didn't work out, but I'm glad it has found a great home.
