Ilex Crenata "Helleri", #1.....

Picked up 2 of these on clearance last week from The Store....

Bout to get to work.....will have to take a break in a bit when my wife gets back with my kid, then I'll get back to it and post.
If time and energy permits, I'll do the second one tonight too.

I love the tight small foliage on these guys.

Actually.....after cutting one branch....I'm thinking that its too soon.
Even though the nights are cool now.... I think if I cut it back now, it may grow new shoots before the first frost.....then die back hard....or totally.

So this thread is officially On Hold.

I’ve got a couple shrubs I bought recently that I decided the same thing on. Slow and steady Mike B. 👍🏻

We have around 200 of them in front of the house. With the right feeding, you can run them over with a truck a few times and they'll still pull through.
Five years ago we dug up the entire front yard with no regards for the plants, only one plant didn't make it.
They do have nice little flowers!

Well....i cant wait till mid winter....and the temps are much cooler now.
It looks like all my trees have stopped growing except my crape myrtle and Chinese elm, due to the timing of the last pruning.
I'm gonna cut into this one now and save the other for later.

Here's a look at the surface of the soil.

A couple big roots showing through a dense mat of fine roots......many many roots.

I'm curious to see what will happen.....
Maybe die back a lot over winter.....
Maybe not...
Maybe die completely....
Maybe come back with a vengeance.

@just.wing.it Any update on this for 2021? I just got a Helleri in a 3 gallon pot on sale today for $15 at the local nursery. Has a really nice naturally curved trunk. Interested to see how yours is doing. I see you started four threads with Helleri. Any updates on the other ones as well?
