I am super new, and so excited to find a forum! I tried facebook groups and looking for local groups, but the Colorado groups meet up when I'm at work every month, boo!!

I've always wanted to get into bonsai, but was never really able to until recently. I bought a Cotoneaster (out of a van, why would you do that,) last October, and I'm pretty sure I killed it. I recently picked up two new trees to start over, about a week ago. I think one might be a Buddhist Pine, and I have no idea what the other one could be. :(

I'm looking forward to reading up now that I've found you guys! I did pretty much everything wrong with the Cotoneaster... I watered it too little, fertilized to often, and kept it indoors. Oops. :( Since then, I've read several books but the basic info I need is so basic they don't even write about it!! It's so frustrating! So I'm excited to read all the posts and then if I still have questions, I'll be bothering you. :)

Here's my tiny tree, if you can guess what it might be.
Pot and all, it's about 6"-7" tall, and I got it from a nursery with the other one, (which I don't have a photo of right now.)

Welcome to the forum and the addiction to trees in pots

Thanks!! I think my two trees are maybe not the best for bonsai now that I've read a little more. The trunks are straight and really woody, I don't know if I'll be able to bend them. As for it being addicting and madness, ACK! How do you guys leave your trees alone? Is that how you end up with so many? ;)

Welcome Mina.

If you've been reading a lot, you're on the right path. Try to listen to all of the voices here and then use that knowledge to make the best decisions for you and your trees. There's a lot of passionate, knowledgeable people here to learn from. Also, as annoying as it sometimes is, the threads you learn the most from are the ones with the arguments and disagreements. Here people really provide information from experiences and science that will give you a basis for making good choices.

As for material, aren't you in yamadori heaven out there in CO? :D

Good luck and enjoy the forum.

Oh, collecting them!! Yeah, every time we walk the dogs out on the trails now, I see thing I want to bring home, my husband already thinks I'm crazy! I already killed one and replaced it with two?? Lol, he's not really a plant guy, so we'll see how this goes. :P

Welcome. Colorado is a beautiful state (live there not long enough) and has many different climate zones. Perhaps you could be more specific as to where you live. That way we can better answer your questions, and advise if there are clubs or bonsai-ist near you.

Super New !! I guess it can't hurt to have a super-power. :p Welcome to B-Nut and your new hobby/art form. Have Fun .

Welcome...what a beautiful state you live in...one place I would love to vacation is Colorado. Though I hear for trails...one needs to allow at least a two week trip to acclimate to there.

Now...that you know that bonsai are outdoor trees. Also understand some that are tropical need to come indoors. So if you get into bonsai deeper make sure you can give them all aspects they need to winter. Makes good success I would imagine.

No clue as to what your little tree is...they didn't tell you when you made the purchase?

I have found this site full of information...the search engine is packed full of threads that answer a lot of my questions...though some don't reach the depth I wish to know...it gives great info. As well as members here are always helpful to give advice that they have learned from.

Wishing you success in your new hobby...and again...welcome.

I'm not sure what any of that means yet, though! :(

Nope, nothing! D:
Just "Oh, it's a good time, you should get two, they're all on sale!"
I don't know how much to trust them. I did some reading before I went in the first time when all I had was the Cotoneaster, and I wanted to get fertilizer, and said "Well I read that they're supposed to go outside, and..." and she interrupted me all shocked, saying "OH, nooooo, don't do that!!!" so I didn't. So it died. ;(
