Hello, about 2 months ago i was doing some landscaping around my backyard and cut down some I believe are catalapa trees and a silver maple. Last month j notice they were growing branches from the side and I decide to dig them out I suscesfully cut off large roots and without killing them and transplanted then to pots I also wire them to shape the branches. Now im not sure what the next step is

Your best bet would be to dedoliate while it is actively producing buds. This might help reduce the large leaves

No no no no! Sometimes you just have to say, "No, don't do that!"
Anymore I say go ahead.
See what you get.
I used to try to help these poor people but they just keep coming.
It's like kids and electricity. They won't really know what it's all about if you stop them from jamming a fork into the electrical outlet.
Sometimes you got to sit back and watch people learn things the hard way.

I hear what you're saying Mike, but if the kid asked for help would you show him how to bend the tines so they fit in, or would you say don't do that?

Been bending trees since before R. Reagan was president. Yep, if forced, I'd say Catalpa was a waist of time. BUT, I got this magnolia I'm working on, even though I know it's in the same category, "leaves too big", as Catalpa. So I guess I really shouldn't dog Catalpa.

It depends on the kid.
And once you know it won't kill them just sit back and enjoy the show.
Or he could just Google catalpa bonsai. It will tell him whether its compatible or not.
Or look up what makes a good bonsai. Somewhere it will say to look for subjects with small leaves, short internodes and fine twigging.
It it lacks any of the three just don't mess with it. Simple.
