I received this tree and about 6 more from a friend who was clearing land in upstate NY. It looks like eastern hornbeam to me but I am not sure. I have 2 other trees that I am also uncertain about and will post pics tomorrow.

Looks like a cherry of some type. Cherries often have small sheaths and/or nodes at the petiole, which this one seems to have...?

Here is a close up of the petiole and also the leaves. I don't see any nodes.

here are two more I can't I.D.

The first 3 shots are the same tree (no hair on the leaves) the following two are a different tree.. All of these trees were growing within a 50 yard radius, under the shade of larger trees in a fairly damp area near a stream.

Here is a close up of the petiole and also the leaves. I don't see any nodes.

It does have sheaths around the petiole...still thinking cherry of some kind for the first one.

I think you pointed me in the right direction with the first and the last tree also. Cherry never came to mind. The both also have a almond smell when I snap a twig.
