Hi!
I have this lovely plant/bush outside of my house and was hoping it could be suitable for bonsai. I am planning of air-layering if it is. If anyone is able to ID it that would be great!
Thanks :)

It’s a cultivar of acer palmatum dissectum (lace leaf Japanese maple). It is more than likely a grafted tree, most dissectums are. As to air layering, you can try but be warned a lot of dissectum varieties have weak root systems on their own, that is why they are grafted to a more vigorous root stock.

Thanks for your reply! I didn’t know they have weak root systems already! Are grafting these species popular for bonsai? Or is that an even worse idea. Cheers 👍

LAce leaf Japanese Maples aren't the greatest for bonsai. Leaves tend to get crispy in the summer (as roots heat up in the shallow container) and they don't backbud as well as the plain old main species.

Weeping maples look great but are also harder to style and manage than the ordinary species. Along with the problems with cultivation already mentioned I would not bother unless you are a very experienced bonsai grower.
