Hello PolarEagle here, this is only my second or third post and you guys always help when I need it..
My issue is 3 weeks ago I just purchased the BC from a bonsai nursery, which he said the tree was planted and grown in Michigan soil in his yard. The tree I'd say is 5 or so years old maybe a little older. It has very nice taper at about 15inches tall the base is about 4 or so inches wide tapered to a point. Which is exactly what I was looking for. And as you prolly know from a bonsai nursery is was a pretty penny not crazy but money I don't wanna just lose.
When I seen the tree he said he just remover the top of the nursery container to expose some nabari and FYI the tree is trimmed but never wired..I noticed the foliage was very tiny just breaking out I assume. I'm still learning the species.
When I got home I set it in the shader area for about a week and then I decided to trim off unwanted branches there were so many coming out in the middle of the trunk it was starting to bulge and I didn't want that. We'll I cut it back to a long leader going up and a few side branches which all are newer branches most a year old the leader I chose may be 2 Years old in my novice opinion.
My issue is after I did that I noticed the branches were brittle which may be normal idk but all the foliage I left on the tree which was small I prolly should of just left it alone but I did not want a huge knot in the trunk. All the foliage that was nice soft and green has dried up and fell off. I water it 1 time a day sometimes 2 times. It's still in a more organic soil he had it in so I didn't think it needed to be watered more. Am I wrong? I was freaked out cuz this is a tree I've been dreaming of having and finally found one I liked and boom it dries up 3 or 4 weeks after it's home i though well maybe it need to grow back on the ground so i dug a hole about 3/4 the pot and cut the bottom off and set it in the ground in the pot to see if that would help..
lol so please is there any hope for this to recover and if so what can I do to bring her back to health..this is going to be such a sweet tree and I feel I ruined it.
I'll attach photos tomorrow. I'm at work now but if anyone has any ideas please send them my way I'm really bummed cuz I feel I wasted hard earned money and killed it all my fault..

First thing is where are you at? Second thing is can you post a picture of the tree? Third is stop cutting until we can see the info from the first two...

A lot of us have BCs that are doing well and you can get help here but we need that information first!

Bald cypress live in the swamp, pretty hard to overwater it, so I'd lean towards under watering. @Cajunrider knows this species well, and is one of the resident experts. The pics will help, take quite a few post your USDA zone, and good luck. :)

I have two of Cajun's trees and they do best with organic soil and lots of water. Mine are in plastic bins without drainage and I keep them pretty wet:

This one just got moved up a similar bin as the first about a week ago and added soil (that was creating the browning of the leaves). It is recovering well with new growth...

Love these trees!

So update and yes I'll add some pics I've been very busy. But good news some new leaves started to sprout today they are about 1/2 long so I hope it's on the road to recovery. I took ur advice and planted in a large tub with only 2 small holes in the ground about 6 inches and the spot I choose in my yard is very bad and holds a lot of water so perfect for a BC I assume. I absolutely love this tree so I really hope not to lose it over inexperience. The photo I added is not mine I'm just adding it so u guys know about what it looks like this photo is very similar to the size of my trunk but my branches are not like this they have not been worked at all and currently aren't in the correct spots..

My tree is only about 5 to 7 years old and was grown in the field by my local bonsai nursery owner so it was born and raised in my zone. Which is zone 6 downriver area of lower michigan ( Southgate to be exact) lol city slicker but I do have a ok setup in my yard and greenhouse.

You are not far from me. These trees love the wetlands and it is hard to make that adjustment for us Northerners'. My two are doing great in their swampboxes...😁

I finally can't kill one from overwatering. :)

Good news you that you got new growth, that's a great sign you're in the clear. Yes you can/should submerge them in a few inches of water and they love it, and are quite thirsty. BTW what's the name of the local bonsai nursery that you go to?
