This is a maple I picked up last fall and am planning to repot and chop this spring. The tree had a scar low down when I purchased it and I wanted to understand how to best heal this and when. Any help would be appreciated. Specifically, how does one know when to reopen a wound vs when it is healing itself properly? When does a hollowing out and filling of a wound need to be performed vs simply re-opening the wound?

Callus on maples will always be proud of the pruning wound, so you need to take that into account when you approach the repair. I would want to carve this down so that the wound you create is slightly larger then the existing scar, slightly taller then wide, and slightly concave- love my knob cutters for stuff like this. Cover it completely with cut paste immediately after the deed is done- I use Duct Seal- and I'd do this at the same time as the re-pot and chop. Have fun!
