I am still new to bonsai.
I like the taper and I like the size. There is a knob in the middle but it is dead wood. Should I let it grow out or should I prune it to force back budding?
The circled is dead wood. The square is a new bud. Here is what I was thinking about cutting.

I'd let it grow out.....unless you are completely satisfied with the trunk size and tree health....and it's what you want. My thought, without tree size information, is that more trunk growth is needed....greater diameter. To me it looks immature yet. Size growth will give this tree much more character.

What's the tree diameter right now?
Is that area below and including the lower two chops deadwood in front?

Letting it grow out will thicken that lower trunk. And, if I recall right, from wild willows growing out back, the willow tree will respond with buds whenever chopped.

I would let it grow out this season and then, in the Fall, select branches, wire, etc. Look up Walter Pall's ramification techniques. His essay was very illuminating.

Nice tree material. I look forward to reading and seeing your progress with the tree.

Believe it or not got it from a Lowe's a month ago. I never find anything there or home depots.
