So as most of you know I am a vendor at Bonsai shows...
Selling paintings that I do with Sumie ink and traditional brushes
On scrolls, boards, and rice paper. I am starting to plan out next
Years events, and to start thinking of where I should be going...

I have meet some really awesome people along the way
And seen some cool trees... and really enjoy traveling to new places.
Always have...

So I need some imput from you fellow B-Nuts... I am having trouble
Finding out about shows, and thought what better way than to just
Ask everyone here, seeing that we have just about every state
Represented, to tell me about what goes on in their neck of the woods.

I want to hear what kinda shows you all have, the dates they happen and
Why you would think it would be worth the trip !!! Go into as much detail
As possible, and who knows maybe we can start a type of Bonsai travel
Guide and convince some others here to start traveling as well, and make
The world a little smaller !!!

Thanks in advance ...

How far are you willing to travel! If it's limited to a few states join every newsletter you can find and have the info come to you. Best bang for you buck would be regional organizations like the lone star bonsai federation, which covers Texas and would give you the big once a year dates. If you joined the bonsai association of Dallas every newsletter tells you the big events around the country and the dates in our newsletter every month.

Here in Florida, we have 3 really cool events that I personally really love...

The first, is trees at Epcot ( Disney world)

The exhibit some of you might have seen my and Jasons postings
Of... is Epcot's Flower and garden show. A really cool event where
Everything is decked out in Spring flowers. Really pretty, and fun,
Besides one can always plan a trip to take the kids who have always
Been wanting to go, and just be really surprised when you come across
The bonsai, as though you hadn't a clue !!! By the way, they are at the
Japanese pavilion... Posting from phone, will get the dates posted

Second, Wigert's Open House

What I really enjoy about this is that he is beginning to really start to
Bring some world class talent in, for instrutional classes, and demos.
I posted a thread in the events section, so check it out. Besides, not
Only do you get to see some awesome trees, you get to see me, seeing
I vend this, and most importantly... get to experience some very nice
Weather. Dates: November 1and 2

Third is a very small show, with some of the best trees I have seen at a
Show so far in the states... Kawa Bonsai Society Shohin event in September.
At first I really thought this couldn't be the place... for I felt like I was entering
A park shed where they stored lawn mowers... but was shocked !!! A must
For folks who love shohin !!! They had Peter Warren instructing and giving demos
This year. So, some nice talent as well... Careful you don't get lost going there,
In Bunnel Florida.

Sure plenty of other cool events here in Florida... these just my faves so far.
Others here in Florida know of a cool event, post it up !!!

I have heard that there are 144 bonsai clubs in Florida and only about 6 in Texas. I think that was a true statement pretty funny. It must be the retired age of people. Must be a lot of good bonsai get turned over all the time.

Kawa's show is always fun. I missed the shohin event, but I've been to their last 4 or 5 annual shows.

BSF's annual convention will be next May 22-26 in Orlando. Enrique Castano, Ed Trout and Peter Warren (guess he likes Florida). I'll be there a couple of those days, planning to do a workshop or two. - maybe Ed Trout's shohin Willow Leaf and Enrique's Campeche. I hope to see you there Stacy.

I honestly don't know who the headliners are yet so not sure if I am going myself. I just know LSBF is the biggest annual bonsai show in TX. That said, I am not sure how it compares to other shows.

HBS boasted earlier this year that this will be the best LSBF show ever though. ;) (don't they always?) :p

Their site has been off and on their for a while...
The only prob here is that they just tell you of
The event. No details, of what it's like or if it is good.
Also cool surrounding places would be nice to know if
One wanted to make a trip of it.

145 !!!
Actually I don't really know...
Would have to go count, but 144 sounds high...
But, perhaps.

It's all about fun and sun, and a couple of beaches
Thrown in for good measure !!!

It worth the trip if you were from out of town ???

Besides a reallly cool artist being there selling brush paintings, :)
I seem to recall you walking out with a really awesome Buttonwood
From a lady who is queen of the buttonwoods, and has been working
With them since before we were born... and I am 42.

Also, for you out of town folks, Disney is a 15 min drive away...

The bonsai association of Dallas lists the big ones of the year. Then it's up to you to google. If I see something I will let you know. As my favorite part of a show is the vendor area. I go to buy things. The show is just icing.

Thanks for this info Smoke...
If you were to recommend one or two events to come to
for someone out of state which ones would you do and why ???
What are your favorites and for what reason ???
Thanks !!!

I have never been a vendor. Never sold a thing at a convention or bonsai event, except for some stands that I brought for people that had ordered them.

If I had to pick a couple for a vendor from out of state, and make the trip worth his while, then it would have to be the yearly GSBF Convention in the fall, the bi-annual Shohin Seminar in a couple months and the Redwood Empire yearly show in August.

I base that on the shear volumne of attendees and the huge vendor areas they attract. People go to these functions to buy and come prepared $$$ to do just that. A regular show can't draw that many paying customers so would probably lose too much money for a across the USA trip.

Boon's yearly show coming up in Jan. is beginning to reach that statice. The trees are Kokufu grade and the show is well put together. In years past they held it at larger venues and had a larger presence. I have not been to a show since they moved to the Lakeside Garden Center due to being sick the last two years it fell on. It is much smaller so the presence should also be smaller.

As Smoke mentioned, the annual Golden State Bonsai Federation Convention will be in Sacramento from Oct 30 - Nov. 2 2014. Forum member Bob Shimon of Mendocino Coast Bonsai is vendor chairman and could give you details on vending there.

It's at a new place this year, and I'm not really involved with a club or the show. So, I don't have much to offer in terms of details. I'll see if I can find a link to the anouncement PDF with schedule. Obviously there are plenty of other things to do if anyone wants to head to Orlando for an extended visit.

I did walk out with a big buttonwood last year. Then I helped my dad get it in his car, and haven't seen it since. I hear it's doing great and is in a 'real' pot these days.
