I've been interested in a hinoki cypress 'seka' since I saw a couple at Brussel's last year. I'm a little timid about picking one up because I can find jack squat about them online. They look like they'd make outstanding shohin or mame, which is kind of the purpose of picking up something small: "no honey, that's not another new tree its a potted cutting :)." I only post the ebay link because its about the only decent photos I can find online of one. Any info someone may have is appreciated. The 'mother' plants NFS and the potted up 'specimens' are beautiful if you're into hinokis in terms of bark color and texture and brilliant green foliage. Thanks!

edit to add: found another pic

It reminds me a lot of the fern leafed Hinoki Cham filicodies.

Hinoki cypress are different than other conifers and have some special requirements regarding their care and pruning. They make beautiful bonsai and are one of, if not my favorite species to work with. However, good pre material is hard to find. You might want to start with something older. The foliage grows at a moderate pace, but the branches and trunk grow very slow. In the last 10 years, I think the trunk on my hinoki has only thickened about 1/2 inch.

Thanks Rob. I've been growing hinoki's for a decade or so, (MUCH) less than many so I'm a little apprehensive about picking up a type of the species I'm not familiar with. But, I am familiar with some of the hassles of hinoki, I think that's what has me spooked of taking the plunge.

Quietobserver,

I have see a couple of 'Seka' or 'Sekka' Hinoki cypress and also like what I see.

I cannot find any non-bonsai reference to 'Seka' or 'Sekka'. The closest I came to was Cham. obtusa 'Chirimen'. I have small 'Chirimen' that look for all intents and purposes to be the same thing, but I am told that 'Seka' or 'Sekka' are much slower growing, much better and therefore, much more expensive than 'Chirimen'

That said, I am happy with my 'Chirimen' and can't wait until they grow a ton more so's I can work on them!

I would be very interested to see any non-bonsai scholarly horticultural reference to 'Seka' or 'Sekka'.

Regards,
Martin

Mark Comstock on Facebook has a ton of hinoki cypress. I don't know for sire if he has that particular cultivar or type you want but he has reasonable prices though .

Thanks. After surfing online for chirimen they're also super close. The 'seka' look like they grow less before/between lignifying and the trunks have some differences, but super close. Tks again.

I have one also, and would like to know their temperature requirements.
Has someone in California grown one successfully?

One of the first trees I had when living in California was an Hinoki. They are or were, sold quite liberally as landscape trees there.

Here is my Hinoki I have had since 1994. I have been redesigning the tree for the last three years. Why so long you ask? Things change.

Thank You Darling....mine is a bit different...but if you say so then it should be fine.
I love your tree. I wanted to give mine a present to someone in SA but now I shall keep it...Lovely!
ONe more tree to keep me busy. I got it in Japan, but it is just a small one...nothing to show for...future masterpiece though...he he he!:p

Thanks for your comments about the tree.

Mine is no masterpiece either but it is going forward and I love the tree. Not too bad for a $6.00 nursery junk pile selection. Proof that the Hinoki can indeed be kept alive for many years as a bonsai.

You have multiplied the 6 dollars 100 or 1000 times...(not sure) , and created a very very nice tree. Job well done.
