I was at the nursery today and came across this dwarf Hinoki cypress. The trunk is pretty thick and it had a nice looking shape to it so I decided to get it as a replacement for a jwp that isn't doing so great. It also has good nebari that can be uncovered. Various articles that I have read state that this can be a pretty tough species to work with. All I have done is some light thinning and wiring to see how I might shape it in the future. Any insight, tips or feedback would be much appreciated when dealing with a Hinoki. Am I on the right track?

Main thing to keep in mind is they don’t backbud on old wood so don’t cut anything green off unless you really, really, really think abut it a long time. Also they like it moist. I keep mine in an equal mix of pumice and haydite with 30% or so composted pine bark and it does great. Before you start stying watch Bjorn’s video on his YouTube channel,
