The landscape nursery near me has awesome sales from time to time so I go walking through there every few weeks.

This guy was in a 15gal can but had a broken apex so I knew it would be of little value to a landscape place. I asked the manager if she would discount it because of this and she marked it down to $15!

It has about a 3" trunk, I have no idea what is below the soil as I don't want to disturb it till spring.

Cool trunk!

bonsai nut needs to get an official beverage that we all agree to use for scale, then the admin could charge the company for ads and use the cash to upgrade content (like videos, interviews, pro articles etc, posts from their tours of japan...etc....)

Nice find. The bark is pretty good already. I'd be tempted to scrape away a bit of the top soil just to see what is there.

You need to chop the trunk at about two inches above the top of the soda can. You can chop it now.
That will force new buds to grow this season. I know that the season is already in full swing, but there is still time to force new growth, or else, you will lose a whole season.
This tree will have to grow brand new branches and develop taper, so you might as well start now. At this time, you can chop branches, but you cannot touch the roots.

Good advice, I will do it tonight.
